Baby Product Design and Development

Baby product design is the process of developing safe, functional products for infants and toddlers, typically ages 0 to 36 months, that also work reliably for the caregivers who use them. It covers concept development, material selection, engineering, prototyping, and safety compliance planning before a product moves into manufacturing. Because babies cannot report a hazard, designers have to treat biting, dropping, and pulling as normal use rather than misuse. Manufacturing-integrated design firms also account for tooling, unit cost, and factory capability at this stage so the product can be produced at scale.

Linton designs and manufactures feeding accessories, bath and grooming products, swaddles and soft goods, nursery organization and decor, baby toys and teethers, diaper bags and travel accessories, and personalized baby gifts. Supported materials include food-grade silicone, injection-molded plastics, textiles, and wood. Linton does not currently position around durable infant products such as car seats, cribs, or strollers, which carry separate mandatory standards.

Baby products sold in the United States must meet the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which limits lead and phthalate content and requires third-party testing at a CPSC-accepted laboratory along with a Children’s Product Certificate. Toys and teethers must also meet ASTM F963, and some product types have their own mandatory standards. Products sold in the EU and other markets carry additional requirements. The applicable standards depend on product type, age grade, and materials, which is why Linton identifies them during design rather than after the first sample.

Most baby products take six to twelve months to move from concept to first production run, with third-party safety testing adding time on top of design and tooling. Simple soft goods and accessories sit at the shorter end. Products with custom molds, multiple components, or electronics take longer. Testing and certification should be scheduled into the plan before production starts, which is the most common place timelines slip when compliance is treated as a final step.

For existing designs, the first step is a manufacturing feasibility and compliance review that flags cost, tolerance, and safety issues before factory sourcing. For products already in production, Linton’s manufacturing cost reduction program starts with a free audit to identify savings without lowering quality.

Linton’s in-house QC team, not third-party inspectors, manages quality at every stage: incoming material verification, first-article inspection against the approved Golden Sample, in-line checks during the production run, and a final pre-shipment audit. The process strictly follows ANSI/ASQ Standard Z1.4 2018 standard, serving as the quantifiable standard for our Quality Control process. For baby products, inspections can also incorporate product-specific safety, material, and compliance requirements identified during development.
